I'll believe it when I see it. Even if they try to go that route, I'm
predicting right now that it will be PG-13 with an 'unrated Director's Cut'.

Interesting that Tarantino at his most mainstream does as well as the recent "Star Trek."

"Inglorious Basterds" - $200 million foreign, $320 million worldwide
"Django Unchained" - $262 million foreign, $425 million worldwide

"Star Trek" - $128 million foreign, $385 million worldwide
"Star Trek 2" - $238 million foreign, $467 million worldwide
"Star Trek 3" - $184 million foreign, $343 million worldwide

If it performs like "Star Trek" in U.S. and Tarantino movie in other countries maybe it's worth a
shot on a reasonable budget.

Judging from the numbers you posted above, it looks like Tarantino
doesn't do well outside the US...and this is compared with STAR TREK, a
franchise known for its relative inability to reach a worldwide audience.

I don't follow how that looks like he doesn't do well outside the U.S., unless you're comparing it
to major franchises.

Look at the box office ratios.
INGLORIOUS BASTARD: 1.60x
DJANGO UNCHAINED: 1.62x
STAR TREK: 3.01x
STAR TREK 2: 1.96x
STAR TREK 3: 1.86x

As you can see, the Tarantino movies do even worse than the STAR TREK
films. Most films that are released internationally get better ratios
that those second 2 TREK films. The first film was the anomaly for the
entire history of the series.

With all those limiters, it is hard to come up with any comparisons.
Perhaps:

IT: $366million foreign, $694million wordwide. 1.9x
DEADPOOL: $420million foreign, $783million worldwide. 1.9x.

....but both of those have series tie-ins even if they are stand alone.

There are films like GET OUT and GIRLS TRIP, but I think with all the
other disqualifers you are setting forth, you have to disqualify black
films as well since they don't get much international traction, either.

How about:

BABY DRIVER: $119million foreign, $227 worldwide. 1.9x.
ANNABELLE: CREATION: $204million foreign, $306 worldwide. 1.5x.
SAUSAGE PARTY: $43million foreign, $141 worldwide. 3.3x.

Even if they put out an 'R' rated TREK, it is still a big budget sci-fi
film so I don't think you can claim that $200million foreign is 'great'
rather than simply 'expected'...and it is just as likely to be
$150million expected.

You just put the 'conservative estimate' right back into the standard
range for the last two TREK reboot films. I think you might be relying
on continued foreign expansion of film interests to even get that much
with an 'R' rated version of the same series.

But Tarantino is know for minimalist productions using a handful of real-world sets
for the entire flick, so a Star Trek written and directed by him wouldn’t necessary
have a bazillion dollar SFX budget, which Tarantino wouldn’t know what to do with
anyway, as that ain’t his thing.

I’m not saying his version of Trek would be the equivalent of “Reservoir Dogs In
Mutha Fuck'n Space” but I wouldn’t expect wall-to-wall CGI explosions either.

All of these, aside from "Sausage Party" maybe (which is itself an
aberration as an adult animated movie) are outliers performing far
beyond their genre/rating expectations.

It's also hard to say what's typical for Tarantino since he's only
released six movies this century. I see him as a lesser Christopher
Nolan in the way he can use his reputation to reach semi-blockbuster
status in almost any genre.

Right now it's a stalled franchise so any direction and positive
outcome would be better. I think "Star Trek" + mainstream Tarantino +
curiosity makes at least $400 million worldwide likely.

What movie do you want to compare it to, then? You've eliminated the
idea of comparing it to anything with a franchise even though it is a
franchise film. You've eliminated the idea of comparing it to anything
with a big budget or wide success in recent years even though it will
have a big budget. You've eliminated the ideas of comparing it to
anything that isn't 'R' rated even though it still seems unlikely that
they will release this proposed film with an 'R' rating. What films is
it you want to make your fair comparison with?

Only 5 original films and one of them lost money at the box office.

Has he done more than one genre? I thought all his films were pretty
much cussing and fighting films.

A good plot (or even half way good) should be able to do about that
anyway. The last 3 films have all been in that neighborhood.
