I just finished watching all five seasons of "Breaking Bad" on Netflix Streaming. I'm not sure why
I never watched this series live, because I'd generally heard good things about it. Anyway, I
thought
it was very good and is definitely worth the time to watch. In fact, I was even a little
disappointed
when it ended.

I thought the writing was particularly good with a lot of plot twists I didn't see coming. Just when
you thought you knew where a particular situation was headed, the writers would flip it around,
in a believable way. The series conclusion was also better than average.

The acting was also excellent. There were several very good supporting characters including
Saul the shylock lawyer, Mike the private investigator and Gus the drug gang leader.
The only character that got to be a little irritating was Jesse, the dope-head drug cook.

In that regard it reminded me of the HBO series "Ray Donovan". If Ray would have just killed
his father (John Voight) half of his problems would be solved. The same with Jesse. If Walt
(Bryan Cranston) would have gotten rid of Jesse, half of his problems would have been solved.

Bottom-line: "Breaking Bad" was one of the best TV series I've watched and I'd recommend it
for most TV buffs.

Pretty dece.

Much to recommend it like the things you said.

Todd.

Giancarlo Esposito.

Music cues.

Skinny Pete.

One hears the term "golden age of television" thrown around pretty casually.. Not that much
qualifies. But some does. Like this. I watched it when it first started and was hooked. It was hard
to get some friends to watch it. They'd put it down without checking it out and make silly comments
like, "Oh man, it sounds like Weeds." I'm not kidding.

The resolution when Walt and Jesse were trapped in the RV and Hank was outside. Hank's retaliation
against Jesse when he realizes he was tricked was priceless.

Hank's gunfight against the twins

Tio Salamanca's visit to DEA headquarters, and his interpreter with the letter board spelling out
his statements to the DEA agents.

Walt poisoning Tuco's food. While unsuccessful, it was a tense scene.

The ATM scene.

It began as a great series, then Cranston turned into a bit of a scene-chewer. I didn't think much
of his sidekick, which is why I never watched the religious cult series he later went into. Taken as
a whole, it is a good maybe even a great series though. Dean Norris also deserves mention. For
those who like this kind of realistic, violent product, check-out Narcos. Pity the F------ MOVIES
can't seem to produce this kind of excellence these days. I think all the best writers deserted for
cable TV.

I think all the best writers deserted for cable TV.

It sure seems that way. It started with The Sopranos, and since then, virtually the really good
series have gone to cable or a premium network like HBO or Starz or Netflix. Network TV is nothing
but reality shows and competition shows and sitcoms and some derivative of Law and Order or CSI.

What was the last truly great dramatic network series? NYPD Blue?

The British made a lot more of quality TV than ever did the Americans, though there's more than
enough garbage there too. Going back the 70s or 80s they had Dennis Potter and other people whose
names I don't know. Their crime shows have always been a notch about our I think because they get a
lot more personal and treat things like class and thread that into the plot. Our crime stuff has
historically been "ripped from today's headlines" and has tended to retain an almost 1920s or 30s
social realism that extended well into this century. Also, recall that the big late century "big
breakthroughs" in TV crime shows were about breaking sex taboos or creating purely bizarre creatures
like Dexter, which are totally untethered from reality--at least most people's reality. Not that BB
was exactly "realistic," but it specialized in outsized characters with outsized appetites that were
merely an exaggeration of reality--or so it seemed to me.

"NYPD Blue" brings back some memories! I was such a fan that when I was in NY City on
a business trip, I took a cab out to see the police station that they always showed in
the series. Needless to say, the inside didn't look much like the TV set.
