Looking for software utility for displaying array of photos for
culling. Array should be miniatures, say about 16 across by 8 down.
Double clicking individual shots should display full screen for
evaluation. Deletion of individual shots. No editing needed except
possibly 90 deg. rotations. Priced reasonable or free. Informed
suggestions most welcome and thanks.

irfanview would work fine for such basic tasks and it's free.

Irfanview has two program icons. One is the main program for viewing
images (and basic editing, like 90 degree rotations) and the other
is the thumbnail viewer, to see all images in a folder displayed
in a grid.
If you doubleclick an image in the thumbnail viewer, the image is
displayed in the main program and if you press ESC to exit the
program, you end up back in the thumbnail viewer.

adobe lightroom, although it does much more than just culling, which
you'll need to do at some point, so might as well have it in the same
app you use to manage photos.

I use FastStone for this. The array is five across at the thumbnail
size I have it set for, but down is the entire file that's opened.

Double-clicking opens the image in full screen. Individual images can
be moved to a different order when re-numbering to present the files
in a different order is desired. The images can be tagged so certain
images only can be displayed, and side-by-side comparisons of two or
more images can be set. There are several other handy features.

The program is free. FastStone Image Viewer 6.4 at www.faststone.org

I have Lightroom and Bridge, but often do my initial sorting in
FastStone. It accepts most types of files from RAW to jpeg.

One downside of faststone is that it won't do slideshows in a window.
Irfanview can do them both fullscreen and in a window (or actually a designated area on the screen,
so you can view slideshows in one
section while being engaged in other activities on the rest of the
screen).

The OP is looking for an app to use to cull his shots. That means he
wants to view each of his new batch of shots as a thumbnail, move from
thumbnail to thumbnail with the arrow key, and delete the no-keepers.
There's no reason to want a slideshow for this function.

When I use FastStone for this, I tag the no-keepers, show tagged files
only, Control-A, and delete all the no-keepers.

I only do this when the images are not going to be used in LR. Some
projects are not included in my LR catalog.

If I'm using LR for this, I'll do the same thing but assign a single
star for the no-keepers instead of a tag. (Essentially doing the same
thing)

The only real advantage of Irfanview compared to FastStone is that
Irfanview can show more EXIF info than FastStone. FS does show EXIF,
but not the complete EXIF that Irfanview shows. That's not usually
something needed in the culling process, though.

Some cameras come with software with that function. I also want the
ability to make the thumbnails larger. All too often they look great
when small, but not quite so great when larger. Adobe Bridge will also
do the job. Few can give you meaningful advice without knowing what else
you want to do, and of course, your budget.
