I am looking to replace my Epson P600

It's only three years old but clogs often and takes a lot of ink to clear.

My previous printer was an Epson and worked flawlessly for six years or
more.

At one time Epson was supposed to be a top of the line printer, but now
most of my friends who do this professionally say I really should look
into Canon.

It will be used for color and B&W printing, no larger than 13" X 19".

Right now I am looking at the specs for both the ip8720 and P400

any recommendations?

I do not need and "fancy" features such as roll printing, wireless or
network capabilities.

Quality of the print is what's important.

Thanks

NOTE: Perhaps just some pointers to how to troubleshoot my current
printer might be all that's needed

Keep the printer cool and power it off with the on/off button. not the
mains switch.

Canon are bubble jet printers and the print heads burn out

Canon gave a substantial grant to an educational organization. A lot of
the grant money was used to purchase thirty Epson printers. It's not
hard to figure out why.

most canon printers have the heads in the ink cartridge, which gets
replaced every time the ink is replaced.

even if the heads did burn out, it's easy to fix. replace the ink.

epson heads *will* burn out if the clean cycle is run too many times in
a row.

Epson use piezoelectric technology in their ink printer heads, they do not get
hot. Epson printheads are far more likely to clog because of the very tiny
nozzles. Long cleaning cycles can be necessary to recover clogged heads. The
upside is generally superior print quality resulting from their technology.

My wife indeed powers it off with the switch. It has not been used
enough for the heads to be "burned out."

That is a major part of your problem. If you power it down from the
control panel the printer parks the print head and then caps it. If
you just shut it down the ink in the nozzles will dry and clog them.

Tell us, why do you display *YOUR* stupidity for all and sundry to see?

This is *NOT* a rhetorical question. Some folk simply do not understand
your masochistic need to be a Troll.

I've got a P800 which as far as I know is a larger version of Philo's
P600. The information you are querying is in the manual.

Not only that but what you said is true for all ink printers of all
manufacture. They all have caps that protect the printhead when the printer
powers down using the printer power button, if power is removed from the wall
this cannot happen and there is a risk of the heads drying out. In some cases
the power down cycle can take several seconds while the printer performs a
short head clean to further reduce the chance of dried out heads.

I was referring to the switch on the printer. It is shut down properly.

Anyway it's working now so will not be needing a new one.

there are many options that can print that size, and if you're going to
do a lot of b/w and want the best results, you should get a *separate*
printer dedicated to b/w using custom b/w inks.

network is not 'fancy' and since you have more than one computer,
having it on the network would be vital.

then epson is your only option.

are you using genuine epson ink or noname third party ink? if the
latter, that's your answer.

do you shut off the printer via its own switch or via an external power
strip? if you do the latter, the heads won't properly park, risking
clogging.

or it could just be defective.

If that is happening then something is very wrong. The P600 is a very good,
and generally trouble free photoprinter. The current generation of Epson
inks, even in smaller cartriges seldom clog. If you are using Epson inks
there is more than likely some other source for the problem. I would
recommend contacting Epson to see if they have a solution. The P600 is as you
know an $800 printer not a disposable cheapie, so I would look beyond
clogging inks to something servicable to provide a fix.

My current photoprinter is an Epson R2880, much older than your P600, running
on an older generation of Epson inks. I have yet to experience a clog.
>

Your Epson P600 is still a top of the line printer. I do not know what Canon
is doing now, but I abandoned my $800 Canon i9900 because I could never
obtain color fidelity with it, even using correct icc profiles. A true black
was never attained with my Canon printer.
>
> It will be used for color and B&W printing, no larger than 13" X 19".

Your P600 serviced, or a P400 is what I would be looking at, but before
spending $600 on a P400 see what a service, or fix for your P600 would cost.
>

If I had to choose between those two I would go with the P400.

One you get into the price range you are looking at all of those options are
going to be on the table.
>

First see if your P600 can be saved. If not go with a P400 if you can find
one. The print quality of either one is going to be identical, and very good.

As a last resort, and if cost is of no concern, then consider looking at an
Epson P800, which is large format, and top of the line, but will not provide
better quality prints than your P600, or a P400, and is twice the price of a
P400.

OK. We only use Epson ink so I guess I will contact Epson before I just

You should consider a colour laser instead. They never clog. No more
head cleaning.

Not mine :-)

But he did not specify "photo printer".

all laser printers. yours is no exception.

laser printers have a smaller colour gamut and cannot be accurately
calibrated.

yes he did, plus he asked in a photo newsgroup, making it rather
obvious what his intent is.

That doesn’t say much for your photographs, or your threshold for
acceptance of sub-par prints.
>
> But he did not specify "photo printer".

Sure he did.

To start with both Philo, and his wife, with their work are well known
regulars in the photo groups.

Secondly, what did you think an Epson P600 is, if not a photo printer?

Thirdly, what did you think the printers he was asking about, the Canon
ip8720, and Epson P400 are, if not photo printers?

With prices ranging from $600 to $800, and using specialized inks, these are
not intended to be casual multi-purpose printers which can be had for less
than $100 these days.

I talked to my wife and told her to run at least one print off no less
than once a month. Her studio is cool when she is not in there, but
quite hot and dry(in winter) when she is working.

Thanks.

Unless it is just plain unmanageable I will put off getting a new printer.

FWIW: Our previous printer was an R800 and it never once had even a hint
of a problem until it finally died completely.

Color laser printers are not the best when it comes to photographic work,
especially when it comes to B&W reproduction, medium to large format, and a
lack of appropriate printer/paper icc profiles on a wide range of photo
paper, and board media.

They are fine for printing general documents, color brochures, leaflets, and
reports, not for fine art photo printing.

Correct. This is all for high-end art exhibition. Good quality is
important.

I did a lot of number crunching. Unless I am making a special print for
someone's wall, I found that Costco costs about the same as my own
printer, and the goofs are on them. i had some images hanging in a local
library competition. Someone inquired about the cost. The email addy was
from a no kill dog shelter. I gave them the image, complete with frame.
The woman was pleasantly surprised. I did have to do the image on matte
paper, and put a slight color cast, because of the lighting in the
location she wanted it hung.
Overall, I have found Costco fairly good and accurate, if you use their
printing profiles.

If I need a print larger than what our printer can do, I have a friend
who has a studio near here that has a large format printer.

Because I maintain his computers, he will do prints for me by barter.

That said, it is essential we do the printing here.

When my wife is working on a painting, she may draw a dozen mock-ups on
her Wacom and print them out.
The printer gets used for more than just final photo prints

After discussing with my wife:
It seems the reason it clogged was due to the fact that it sat for
nearly six months unused!

I am going to make sure she does at least one print every few weeks.

I have hundreds of JPG's I would not mind printing out 4" x 6" and
keeping in an album.

My P800 has sat for a long time unused without any clogging. I think
there is more to it than that. Here is the manual
https://files.support.epson.com/docid/cpd4/cpd41370.pdf You should see
page 21 about the 'Power Off' timer. I've set my P800 so that it shuts
down automatically after 20 minutes if it hasn't been used in that
time. That way it parks and caps the printhead automatically without
me ever having to worry about it.

The same is pretty much true for my much older R2880, which still produces
great quality prints, with no clogging, and continues to save me from
spending cash better spent on other stuff by upgrading to a P600, or P800.

One of the advantages of the larger printer is that the cost of ink is
less per ml. I'm now at a point where I have spent no more on ink and
printer than if I had bought the P600 - and I have the advantage of
the larger print size too.

For now the R2880 does all I ask of it, and I am sure I should be able to
wring a few more years out of it. 13 x 19 is my current home printing limit,
and if I have to go larger I turn to Mpix, or BayPhoto.

My budget is being tooled up for another two, or three Fujinon lenses
sometime after I get home from my February trip. Once those are safely in my
kit, I have to seriously replace my 2010 iMac before even thinking about a
new printer.

I would probably be still using my Epson 3800 if the electronics in
one half of the print head had died. A new head was nearly half the
cost of the printer and fitting and aligning it was about the same of
the other half of the cost. In the end I got a good price selling it
for parts.

I have had an Epson P800 for a year or so now and have never had it
clog. Two questions immediately come to mind:

1. How do you turn it off? Do you just shut the power off at the wall
or do you shut it down from the control panel?

2. What ink are you using?
